Learning strategy

Learning communication skills requires a lot of practices first of all. Communication skills comprise 4 aspects: speaking, listening, writing and reading. Speaking entails correct pronunciation of English sounds and words and fluency, that is, the ability to speak well, to express your ideas without difficulties. To learn the correct pronunciation, you need the basic materials such as CDs and a computer and practice the pronunciation following native speakers. To improve the fluency, you must learn the various expressions provided in this modules and do exercises of using them in sentences orally or in writing. It is also very necessary to find colleagues or other persons with whom to regularly speak to in English. Do not be ashamed of making mistakes.

Listening is another important aspect of communication skills. The first challenge in listening in English is to listen to native speakers of English. You may be very good at English but fail to catch the messages from native speakers because you are not accustomed to their accents. All you can do to overcome this challenge is to regularly listen to native speakers through available recorded materials, or through radio and television programmes. In the beginning you may listen and do not catch the message but you should persevere, with time you will improve. Continue even after you have completed this module because you will always need to improve your English, and listening to native speakers is one of the best way to do it.

Writing is another important aspect of communication skills. To write successfully, first of all you need good knowledge of grammar. If you have difficulties in grammar, take any grammar textbook and revise the basic grammar. But it is not enough to master grammar rules to write successfully; there are important writing techniques that you must pay attention to. Learn the structure and strategies for writing paragraphs and essay and try to follow them as you write.

Learning English is continuous; so while doing it, pay attention to spelling. When you learn new words or whenever you hesitate on the spelling of a word, practice by writing on a piece of paper and checking with the dictionary. Remember that you will need writing skills in all the modules at all levels.

The last communication skill that you need to improve is reading. You will learn some reading techniques, and you should regularly read following those techniques. The more you practice reading, the better at reading you become. Read a variety of materials: newspapers, textbooks, novels, poems, plays etc. In fact one of the qualities of a teacher that you intend to become is interest in to reading. So make sure you enjoy reading not only for learning this module but for all your life.
