AIM
This module gives the student the knowledge in special needs education, as well as in guidance and counseling. The student will apply this knowledge in his activities as a teacher. Thanks to this module, the student-teacher will address the individual differences among learners. By guidance and counseling students-teachers will help the learners with the various socio –personal problems they encounter.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Knowledge and understanding
Having successfully completed the module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
i. basic concepts of general psychology and aim of study;
ii. Special Needs Education as well as guidance and counselling
iii. the causes and the nature of the different limitations of learners;
Cognitive/Intellectual skills/Application of knowledge
Having successfully completed the module, students should be able to:
iv. Explain, justify and consider the measures that involve school adjustment for integration and inclusion of learners with Special Educational Needs;
v. Help learners gain an insight into the origins and development of emotional difficulties, leading to an increased capacity to take rational control over feelings and actions.
Communication/ICT/Numeracy/Analytic Techniques/Practical Skills
Having successfully completed the module, students should be able to:
vi. Develop strategies of working with parents and the community in general to help students with Special Educational Needs.
vii. Use skills gained in guidance and counselling in order to alter maladaptive behaviour.
General transferable skills
Having successfully completed the module, students should be able to:
viii. Assist learners to move towards fulfilling their potential
ix. Provide learners with skills, awareness and knowledge to enable them confront social inadequacies.
x. State the principles of guidance
