Summary

 History of Rwanda

Rwanda has a long and important history. Before colonial rule, Rwanda was organized as a kingdom led by the Mwami (King). Society had different groups and leaders, including chiefs, farmers, cattle keepers, and craftsmen. People lived mainly through farming, cattle keeping, trade, and other traditional activities. Ubudehe, Itorero, and umuganda helped strengthen cooperation and community life.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Rwanda came under European colonial rule. First, it was controlled by Germany, and later by Belgium after World War I. Colonial rule changed Rwanda's political and social systems and increased divisions within society.

Rwanda became independent in 1962. The years that followed included political problems, conflict, and periods of violence. The worst event was the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, in which more than 800,000 people were killed in about 100 days.

After 1994, Rwanda focused on rebuilding the country, justice, unity, reconciliation, and development. Today, Rwanda continues to remember its history while working toward peace and a better future.

Key point: Learning the history of Rwanda helps students understand where the country came from, learn from past mistakes, respect others, and help build a peaceful and united Rwanda.
